Soul Growers
Soul Growers is the side project of fifth-generation Barossans James and Paul Lindner of the acclaimed Langmeil winery. Together with winemaker David “Westy” Cruikshank and marketing man Paul Heinicke, they produce classic reds from a vineyard near Greenock, overlooking Seppeltsfield.
Soul Growers, listed by James Halliday as among his ‘Top 10 New Australian Wineries’ in 2007, also source fruit from numerous growers representing a vast array of soils and sub-regions of the Barossa, blending them together to get a true reflection of the depth and quality of the flavours in their backyard.
It was James Lindner who dreamed up the name, sitting atop the rocky outcrop of multi-million-year-old bluestone that underpins their vineyard. James asked himself, ‘What is the soul of the Barossa?’ and quickly answered: “It’s the growers.”
And so a label was born, helmed by a bunch of mates with a combined 90-plus years in the wine trade. "Soul brothers", some locals call them, and they share a common interest in preserving the quality of traditional Barossa blends such as Shiraz Cabernet and Shiraz Grenache Mourvedre.
To this end, they employ a traditional, hands-on winemaking style, with open fermenting, basket pressing, minimal handling and no fining or filtration, ensuring the essence of the region is captured in all their wines. - Megan Lehmann
