Capital Wines

Image of Capital Wines

Capital Wines is a boutique winery situated in Murrumbateman NSW (30 mins North of Canberra), within the Canberra Wine Region.

In 2008 Mark and Jenny Mooney (of the Royal Hotel at nearby Gundaroo) and Andrew and Marion McEwin (of Kyeema Wines) joined forces to form Capital Wines. Kyeema winery and vineyards were subsequently consolidated as a part of Capital Wines, with the Kyeema Vineyard producing fabulous fruit each vintage.

The Kyeema Vineyard sits on a belt of decomposing granite, one of only a handful of vineyards in the region with this type of sub-soil profile. To add to the vineyard’s uniqueness it produces old vine Shiraz from a highly coveted Penfold’s clone.

In recent years plantings of Tempranillo were made – this grape thrives on extremes of heat and cold and so is well suited to the Canberra region – the reviews are already extremely positive.

The winemaker at Capital Wines is Andrew McEwin – the great, great grandson of George McEwin who was among the first men to plant Adelaide Hills vines in the 1840s. Andrew, originally from McLaren Vale, is a highly respected and awarded winemaker.

The cool climate of the Canberra region and corresponding long ripening season always produces fruit of exceptional quality with intense yet elegant flavours. Wines made from these tight, rich berries are garnering increased attention from the national wine media every year.

Capital Wines also make wine for several smaller wineries within the Canberra district. The winery also hand selects parcels of quality fruit from various sites in surrounding areas, to create wines with complexity and depth under its own label.  Multi-vineyard winemaking is a popular affair in the Canberra district and it's proving to be worthwhile.

Capital Wines has been given a 5 star winery rating in James Halliday’s 2011 Australian Wine Companion.  - Daniel Jess.
