David Franz Eden Valley Riesling 2008
Eden Riesling is sometimes linear and one dimensional. Dave Franz has created a wine here that defies any Eden 2008 Riesling that I have seen. There are layers and layers of fruit mixing lime rind, melon and guava as well as concentrated minerality and sherbet. The palate has generous, even acidity and every sip is a new exploration into Eden and its capacity for fruit flavours, testified too by the slightly savoury snow pea and fresh artichoke that seldom appear in the king of white varieties. -SG

The 2008 vintage wreaked havoc in all corners of the Barossa. The heatwave was relentless and ripe fruit was far too hot to harvest. Dave Franz has turned this natural phenomenon to his favour and in doing so has created this seldom seen late harvest Barossa Riesling. Tinned peaches overwhelm the nose, they are so powerful in their concentration that you can almost see and feel their texture as the wine hits your palate. The palate itself is smooth and understated, but offers flavours of lightly buttered toast and apricot jam. This wine is a masterpiece and Dave Franz is a genius. -SG
