Spinifex Shiraz Viognier 2007

  • Region Barossa Valley, SA
  • Type Red
  • Size 750ml
  • Alcohol 14.5%
Some people question whether the Barossa should be making Shiraz Viognier. Well, whack this beauty in front of them and I bet they'll go quiet. It starts with an extremly lifted nose of fragrant raspberry and rich blackberry along with violets and jasmine, star anise and cocoa. Toasty oak is tastefully applied, adding a little mocha. Supremely structured by gorgeous acidity and "to die for" tannins, the flavours are intense but layered and harnessed for best effect. There's some spice and earth too, but it's the electric vibrancy on the palate which enthralls me. Spinifex have produced a wine with a wine with a serious "wow" factor here. Splurge and crack open a bottle now or cellar with confidence. -JP

James Halliday, the Wine Companion
 says:

Inviting vibrant colour; quite a polished and poised bouquet of allspice redcurrant and blackberry fruit; at the core of the wine there is a mineral complexity that is thoroughly engaging, and the hedonistic level of sweet fruit marries seamlessly with it and the toasty oak; beautifully constructed, on a large scale, the balancing acidity provides brightness to the finish.

 says:

Exactly what top-notch shiraz viognier should be. Elegant and spicy but in the most positive of ways – not as an excuse for thin weediness (or indeed, conversely, for more over-ripe sweetness). Full fruit flavour of blackberries and kirsch, and lots and lots of vibrant, vivid juiciness. A beautiful mouthful of flavour … with style.
