Smallfry Barossa Red Blend 2009
- Region Barossa Valley, SA
- Type Red
- Size 750ml
- Alcohol 15%
Winemaker Wayne Ahrens has been playing around with hardy European varieties such as Carignan and CInsault which he believes are well suited to southern Australia’s hot climate. This Grenache Shiraz Mataro-style blend includes small amounts of both grapes, with the Carignan adding texture and Cinsault a high aromatic note. Made from fruit sourced from Wayne’s Vine Vale vineyard on the eastern side of the Barossa Valley floor, the 2009 has a bright freshness and a lovely silky mouthfeel. You’ll find savoury gamey flavours, mingling with sweet raspberry jubes and licorice, leading to soft tannins. Delicious stuff. Only 250 cases made. - JL
James Halliday
says:Light red-purple; a classic Southern Rhône style blend of Grenache/Shiraz/Mataro/Carignan/Cinsaut; light-bodied but has deceptive length and persistence due in part to perfectly pitched fine tannins; there is also a veritable bouquet of multi-fruit aromas and flavours.
