Smallfry Barossa Grenache 2009
- Region Barossa Valley, SA
- Type Red
- Size 750ml
- Alcohol 16%
Old Vine Grenache is starting to come back into fashion. Considering that it is one of the Barossa Valley's historical treasures, that's great news. This rendition from the Smallfry winery smells of raspberries, damp earth, choc/cherry aromas and spice. In short it smells of genuine depth, not light confectionery. The entry is plenty bright with crunchy acidity and cola like elements before earthy notes temper things. Gradually the palate moves towards orange rind, char and a fair whack of both warm and sweet spice. Smudgy tannins dry things up and the length is excellent. The interplay of sweet and savoury characters generates some real fascination at an affordable price point. Only 80 cases were produced, so get in quick. -JP

James Halliday, the Wine Companion
says:Typical light colour of Barossa Valley grenache; has a very fragrant bouquet, and deceptive intensity and length to the palate; in a texture trio with pinot noir and sangiovese; the alcohol simply doesn't heat the finish, why I don't know; 80 cases made from the best barrels.
